Castle Lake in Siskiyou County.

Castle Lake is located less than 10 miles from Interstate 5 and the city of Mt. Shasta in south county. The road to the lake is paved, with ample parking next to the lakeshore. The photo at the right, by Michael Zanger of Shasta Mountain Guides shows Castle Lake as seen from the ridge above the lake, with Mount Shasta and Black Butte in the distance.

Formed by glaciers 10,000 years ago, Castle Lake is held by a pine-covered granite bowl. This 47 acre lake is 120 feet deep next to a steep rock wall on the south shore, offering impressive diving opportunities. Above the lake are the beautiful lofty spires of Castle Crags State Park Wilderness Area. Lake elevation is 5200'.

Photo above by local photographer Kevin Lahey features a small waterfall supplied by melting snow in spring and early summer, with a view of Mt. Shasta in the distance.

Photo at left is by local photographer Jane English, as well as the two views below.

Accessible by paved road, just 7 miles from the city of Mt. Shasta and Interstate 5, Castle Lake is a favorite for paddlers, fishermen, families enjoying swimming and picnic outings, hikers, photographers and artists.

Even in the winter months, the road to Castle Lake is cleared, and a destination for back country ski and snowshoe enthusiasts, and ice fishermen. Photograph by Jane English.
