Railroad Settings in Siskiyou County.

The historic logging town of McCloud is home to the McCloud River Railroad, which still operates between Mt. Shasta, McCloud and Burney. The tracks pass through thick forests around McCloud and relics of logging camps and water towers from a past era. The railroad travels to Burney in Shasta County, crossing over Lake Britton into the volcanic landscape of sage brush and basalt.

In northern Siskiyou County the Yreka Western Railroad runs from Yreka to the historic railroad and ranching town of Montague. The Blue Goose Steam Train operates during the summer season, providing visitors with spectacular views of Mount Shasta and the Shasta Valley.

McCloud Area
Just 20 minutes from the I5 freeway, McCloud is surrounded by dense forests.

The rail yard of the McCloud River Railroad is extensive and includes the original train barn that was built when the lumber mill and railroad came to McCloud in the late 1800s.

Several sites in McCloud are home to old wooden cars, snow plows and other remnants of the town's railraod history. McCloud is also home to the Shasta Sunset Dinner Train and McCloud River Railroad, which offer dinner excursion trains and stream train rides.

The town is surround by thick forest, as seen here from the railroad tracks heading east out of town.

Approximately 1 hour east of McCloud by railroad, McIntosh Vista offers excellent views of the forested valley floor and surrounding mountains, including the Eddys, Castle Crags and Mount Shasta.

Across the valley, the Eddys are snowcapped late into June or early July. McIntosh Vista is accessible from the railroad and a road just downslope from the tracks.
