The Trench on the Klamath River, northern Siskiyou County.

The Trench is a Class II - III rapid on the Middle Klamath River in Siskiyou County, a few miles downriver from the town of Happy Camp. These photos, taken on a rainy day in early September, show the grey rock walls along the banks of this rapid. The river flow was around 1000-1200 cfs during this photo sequence. River flows are usually higher, depending on season.

State Highway 97 follows the river and can be glimpsed at the top of this first photo. The area is generally forested with pine, oak, madrone and bushes, except for the rock areas at river's edge.

An inflatable kayak drops over the edge of the rapid.

The rock walls narrow to a drop at the top of the rapid.

The rapid pushes close to the rock wall on river right.

The Klamath River in Siskiyou County offers many other rapids, from gentle runs between willow and blackberry banks, to thrilling cliffs with Class IV and V whitewater. Adjacent highways, communities and services as well as regular dam-released flows throughout the year, make this river an excellent location for filming.
